What Does Pay it Forward Mean?
“Pay it forward” – Is an expression for describing the beneficiary of a good deed repaying it to others instead of to the original benefactor. The concept is old, but the phrase may have been coined by Lily Hardy Hammond in her 1916 book In the Garden of Delight. Respond to a person’s kindness to oneself by being kind to someone else. “I will take the support I have had and try to pay it forward whenever I can”.
Free of Charge vs. Pay it Forward
Something that is free of charge has no attachments tied to it, and does not allow for a trade in energy to be present in the exchange. Pay it forward indicates that we are sharing our abundance in order to collectively make our society flourish and to spark a light of hope and willpower to those in need. It does not have to indicate that the receiving person is without funds to make their amends, it simply constitutes that we are collectively sharing our resources in order to always have enough to everyone in need.
Life perspective or philosophy – Good deeds that help others are forged from different aspects and life philosophies throughout the world. Some people call it “karma” deriving from the religious aspect of the Hinduism religion, where as your action in this life will affect your next reincarnation/rebirth/next lifetime. Some call it “goodwill” that you do something that is considered socially accepted and helping out those in need. My view is rather that it is “a appropriate gesture” to give more if we are able too. It is about remaining a balance between our energies throughout life and also to inspire accountability in others that we can and benefit collectively from paying it forward whenever it is appropriate to do so.
Intentions behind zero fees or paying it forward – In the realms of energy/shamanic and healing communities, it has always been said that “A healer shall not reject someone for lack of funds if they have the tools to help them”. This indicated that a healer that has the “medicine/knowledge/power” would always help out those that are in need and that seek the person out for advice. What is needed is a energetic exchange of some kind which used to be trading goods, money, food, grains, clothes, services etc in order to maintain a energy balance in the exchange. This is impertinent not to leave anyone drained for giving all of their energy away without a reciprocal exchange of energy.
This has nothing to do with the intentions of having a ulterior motives behind the act in question. We do not give to receive, it is merely something that comes naturally to us as emphatic human beings. Much like a natural law of order that keeps the healthy vitality of mankind spiraling upwards for all parts involved in any given arena where exchanges are made.
When I was living in Sweden, I did not have a lot of financial resources starting up my business as a massage therapist and instead of paying expensive fees on marketing I simply reduced my prices and added a lot fo free content and activities. I had the time but no the financial funds to market myself. So I thought to myself: why not lower the threshold for people to get to know me and my services? As my own journey in self-development grew this way of thinking has also changed from having a a somewhat ulterior motive to doing this exchange in order to simply “paying it forward” as a appropriate gesture.
If you are able to pay on any of this kind of events, pay what you think it is worth and know that this will also support this kind of activities for those who may not be able to come because of different financial situations. Paying it forward is a modern and deeply spiritual way of sharing knowledge for the greater good and to help out anyone in need regardless of their financial capabilities.
“Paying it forward is about shining some light in the world of today, without having any ulterior motives rather than to pass along a helpful hand whenever it is appropriate”.
